KENNEBUNK, Maine - Nearly 300 students at Kennebunk High School (KHS) voted in Maine’s Student Mock Election on Tuesday, Oct. 29, electing Democrat Kamala Harris as president.
The statewide Mock Election is typically held one week before Election Day.
KHS students also reelected Independent Angus King to the U.S. Senate and Democrat Chellie Pingree to the U.S. House of Representatives. The students also voted on the five ballot questions as well as local races.
“The social studies department has been covering the election and discussing with all grades how the process works,” said KHS Social Studies Department Co-Chair Shannon LeBlanc.

Students also learned about the complexities of Maine’s ranked-choice voting system. Maine is one of the only states in the country with ranked-choice voting in place.
“I thought it was interesting that only a few states do it,” said one KHS freshman. “I think it is cool to make sure that there isn't a tie.”
Participating in the Mock Election gives students an opportunity to experience a real-world scenario to tie in lessons from the classroom. The mock election is utilized to teach students about constitutional principles and the democratic functions of national, state, and local systems.
